As part of the School Improvement Plan, we are striving to improve phonics attainment in both Early Years and Key Stage 1. In the Early Years 'Jolly Phonics' is the programme we use to develop synthetic phonics. This teaches children the five key skills needed for reading and writing using a multi-sensory approach which engages and motivates pupils. When the programme for Jolly Phonics is complete, children progress onto 'The Devon Early Reading Programme' which again uses a synthetic phonics approach to support early word recognition and develop early skills of spelling. Pupils in Year groups 2 to 6 follow Decision Spelling Programme supporting a progressive approach to spelling enabling pupils to make informed choices when writing and spelling independently.
