Online Safety is an important part of keeping children safe at East-the-Water Primary School
Online Safety (also called ‘internet safety’ or ‘E-safety’) is often defined as the safe and responsible use of technology. This includes the use of the internet and also other means of communication using electronic media (e.g. text messages, gaming devices, social media etc.).
Online safety is as much about behaviour as it is electronic security. Online safety in this context is classified into three areas of risk:
- Content: being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful material
- Contact: being subjected to harmful online interaction with other users
- Conduct: personal online behaviour that increases the likelihood of, or causes, harm
At East-the-Water Primary School we take Internet e-safety extremely seriously. Internet safety lessons are built into PSHE lessons in every year group, teaching all pupils about how to stay safe and behave appropriately online.
We have extensive security measures in place in school to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. Any incidents are recorded and managed through a robust process. By doing this, we are able to understand how our pupils use the internet and offer targeted support for classes, individuals and parents.
We understand that parents and carers can be valuable educators for children on many issues that arise online. As such, we place them at the heart of our strategy. We can only be successful in keeping children safe online if we work with parents to ensure the Online Safety message is consistent. It is important that parents know the risks and speak to their children about how they can keep safe and behave appropriately online.
We have one key message for any child who comes across inappropriate or harmful content online:
“Stop and seek the help of a trusted adult right away”.
